2017 Spring Season

The start of the 2017 Little League season is right around the corner and we’re looking forward to another great season. Below you will find a checklist to help guide you in the process and some important information about the upcoming season.

Player/Parent Checklist:

  1. Register – We offer multiple ways to register your child (see Registration section of this email).  Please register by the required deadlines.
  2. Documentation – You may be required to provide documentation to register your child (if you are new to the league or have moved from last year’s address).  Please read the Age/Residency and School Rule sections of this email to understand what may be required for new and returning players.
  3. Tryout/Evaluation – Please attend one of the tryouts/evaluations (see Tryout/Evaluation section of this email). All children make a team.  This is simply a way for the league and coaches to evaluate the skills of each child and to properly create (or draft in the higher divisions) equitable teams.
  4. Volunteer – The league is always in need of volunteers.  Coaching is a great way to volunteer and a need for the league.  We provide coaching clinics before the season (including Big Al’s Baseball Clinic) for anyone interested. Please check the league website.  You can also help with the concession stands or by being a team parent.

Age/Residency Documentation:

·         For returning players (those who played in Stamford National in Spring 2016), no age or residency documentation is required.  Please contact the Player Agent via email if you have moved to an address that is outside the league’s boundaries. While you remain eligible to play in Stamford National, additional paperwork is required.

·         All new players (did not play in Stamford National in Spring 2016) will need to provide copies of three (3) different forms of proof of residency (e.g. utility bill, cable bill, parent/guardian driver’s license, etc.) and the child’s birth certificate. These documents can be provided at the walk-in registration, by mail, or by email.  If sending the documents by mail, PLEASE DO NOT SEND ORIGINALS. If you have any questions, contact .

NOTE: ALL players, including returning players, must retain in their own records copies of three (3) bills that show proof of residency dated between 2/01/16 and 2/01/17.

School Rule:  In addition to residing within the league’s boundaries, kids are allowed to play for the league where their school is located, regardless of where you live. This means that children attending the following schools are also eligible to play little league with Stamford National: Hart, KT Murphy, Rogers, Roxbury, Stillmeadow, Westover, Cloonan, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Waterside School, Sacred Heart School, and Trailblazers Academy. You and the school will be required to complete a form (located on the league’s home page; one form with a section for each). The residency documents are not required under the school rule.

Tryout/Evaluation:

·         Majors: Tryouts will be held on March 4th at Stillmeadow School.  Any player aged 10-12 who wishes to be eligible for the Majors division, MUST attend the tryout on March 4th, even if you are a returning Majors player. Please note that you only need to attend this tryout if you are a returning Majors player or if you are league age 10 or 11 and would like to play in the Majors division this season. If you do not wish to play in the Majors division, you do not need to attend this tryout.

·         Non-Majors: Evaluations will be held on March 19th at Stillmeadow School.  All players aged 10-12 that are not selected for the Majors division and all players aged 8-9 must attend the evaluation on March 19th.

·         Please refer to the website in February for tryout/evaluation times for your age group.

Additional Information:

·      Our division structure is listed below.

·      New volunteers are always welcome; especially coaches at the lower divisions (need not be a baseball expert and coaches clinics are provided).  Sign up when registering your child, either online or on the registration form.

·      The regular season for the Majors division will begin in early to mid-April and other divisions will begin in late April. Please refer to the website (www.stamfordnational.com) in the coming weeks for the start dates of each division, as well as all the latest information, news and highlights.

Please email if you have any questions about the registration, tryouts, age guidance, or league structure.

League Structure

For the 2017 season, there will be 5 divisions (described below) – Majors, AAA, AA, A, and Tee-ball. Each division will include a range of ages, but please note that the registration fees are structured by age. For all divisions, practices, game schedule, and field use (which will be mixed over all fields available) will be determined over the next few months.  A summary of each division is as follows:

·      Majors Division:

  • Typical age range: 10-12, and possibly 9-year-olds that played in AAA the prior year. By rule, all 12 year-olds must play in the Majors division. If you feel that your 12 year-old is not ready or prepared to play in the Majors division, you have the option of signing a waiver that will allow him/her to play in the AAA division.
  • Playing Time: Games are competitive with playing time based on skill level and no requirement for equal playing time among the players. However, each player must play a minimum of 3 innings and receive at least 1 at-bat. Younger and/or less-skilled players may end up playing the minimum amount.
  • Team Placement: A draft is held for the Majors division.  Please keep in mind that the Majors division has limited roster spots for “the under 12” age player, since all 12 year olds must play in the Majors unless they elect to play in AAA or do not attend the tryout. This is a Little League rule, which all leagues must follow.  The number of “Under 12” openings will not be known until registration is complete.
  • Playing Rules: Standard Little League rules are followed with the addition of some local league rules (detailed on the league website) and some additional safety rules.

·      AAA Division:

  • Typical age range: 9-11
  • Team Placement: A draft is held for the AAA division.
  • Playing Time: All players bat in a continuous batting order and all players must sit out an inning in the field before any player sits out for a 2nd inning.
  • Playing rules: Division-specific rules that are different than the Majors division will be drafted and implemented and can be found on the league website.

·      AA Division

  • Typical age range: 8-9
  • Team Placement & Coaches: Teams and coaching staffs will be determined by the Board of Directors, using player ratings from the non-Majors tryout session, with the intention of formulating balanced and competitive teams.
  • Playing Time: All players bat in a continuous batting order and all players must sit out an inning in the field before any player sits out for a 2nd inning.
  • Playing rules: Division-specific rules that are different than the Majors division will be drafted and implemented and can be found on the league website.

·      A Division

  • Typical age range: 6-7
  • Team Placement & Coaches: Teams and coaching staffs will be determined by the Board of Directors.
  • Playing rules: Scores are not tracked as the division is primarily instructional. Division-specific rules that are different than the Majors division will be drafted and implemented and can be found on the league website.

·      Tee-Ball

  • Typical age range: 4-5
  • Team Placement & Coaches: Teams and coaching staffs will be determined by the Board of Directors.
